omochi ~ japonais snack

April 28, 2011 § 7 Comments

my mother sent me this traditional japanese snack that she made from scratch.
i have a big bag of these frozen little squares, and all i have to do is take one
from the freezer and pop it in the toaster for a few minutes, until it’s nicely
golden on the edges. then, i take a couple of nori sheets {toasted seaweed} and
wrap the mochi square inside it like a little present. lightly flavor with soy or
tamari sauce and gently press down with chopsticks. i like to serve it with a few japanese pickles {takuan and umeboshi plum} on the side. while this little
snack is eaten year round, it is traditional to eat it especially during the new year.
